GRAVE MISTAKES OF PASTORS/ LEADERS ABOUT MARRIAGE – Part 1

As leaders, counselors and pastors, there are mistakes about marriage and family life that must be avoided if we want our lives to be true models for other people. Most times, these people read us as an open Bible; they want to behave and react like us because we are the ‘Jesus’ they can see and touch. To fulfill our ministry as leaders, we must avoid the following mistakes:

  1. Reporting Your Spouse to Church and Family Members: This will bring great embarrassment to your counselling ministry because it is inappropriate. People are supposed to report to you and not the other way round. If your marriage needs help; see a more matured counsellor or a senior pastor. Never report your spouse to the people you should be counseling.
  2. Putting Ministry Before Marriage: Concentrating all your attention to the ministry to the detriment of your home will be a grave error. Your home should be your number one ministry. Your priority in life should be: God, your spouse, your children and your ministry. Don’t win souls for God but lose your family to the devil. Start your soul winning from your home before you proceed into His vineyard. Give adequate attention to your family; know the time to be a pastor/counsellor and the time to be a husband/wife, father/mother and a lover.

 (Phil.2:5)

  1. Dishonouring Your Spouse before the Church Members, Counsellee and Family Members: As a counsellor, you are expected to build a marriage where your spouse is treated like a king/queen. Abusing your spouse, nagging, contradicting each other, cursing and shouting on each other should not be found in your family.
  2. Failure to Love Your Wife: Failure to demonstrate love to your wife by showing her kindness, care and attention will also cause problems. Giving her gifts, thoughtful support, taking her out and treating her like a special lady. (Eph.5:28)
  3. Failure to Submit to Your Own Husband: As a female counsellor, many people will watch closely how you relate with your husband. If you are stubborn, disobedient, heady or unyielding they will know. If you are competitive at home with a veiled “Olympic spirit” they will see it. If you are proud and arrogant and have taken the position of leadership, lording things over your husband, then, your counselling ministry will be ineffective and without bite. The most important key to the success of a female counsellor apart from her relationship with God is her relationship with her husband. (Eph.5:22)
