7 PARENTING PROBLEMS WITH RAISING THE GIRL-CHILD
Bisi Adewale
Most modern parents have serious problems raising their girl-child because of environmental factors. We need to consider these and get the right solutions to them to make our parenting work an easy one.
- SEXUAL ABUSE: The problem of sexual abuse is becoming an epidemic in our own time; it is everywhere and parents are wary and fearful. It is in the school, places of worship, at home, etc.
Wise parents will go all out to learn about sex abuse and give their girls adequate sex education. - WHAT TO TEACH ABOUT SEX: Most parents do not belief in sex education and those that believe do not know what to teach their girls about sex.
- WHO TO TRUST WITH THE CHILD: In those days, you could leave your child with a neighbour and go for the whole day. Nowadays, it is very difficult for parents to do that because they don’t know who to trust with their girl; as such, they don’t want to leave the young girl to a man that will molest her or with a woman that will introduce her to lesbianism.
- CONSTANT FIGHT OVER HER HAIR: One of the fights mothers fight with their young girls are “hair wars”
It is in her eyes. It needs a trim. You like it up, she likes it down. Yes, she has to wash it. No, she’s not going out of the house with that rat’s nest on her head. Fine, you’ll curl/straighten it just this once. No, she can’t do it herself. The hair wars will last as long as you let them .The good news: Eventually she’s likely to see the light and realize that clean and combed really is the better look. - BOYS ATTENTION: Your little girl will soon begin to catch the attention of boys; some good boys but many of them bad. This is always a source of concern to parents and their concerns are genuine. Some boys are just after young girls to steal, kill, and destroy.
- TEENAGE PREGNANCY: One of the most terrible periods in the life of a young parent is the time they discover their young princess, their baby-girl is also carrying a baby. It is not always funny or easy for the young mother and father.
- TEENAGE AGE TROUBLES: The teenage age of a child comes with lots of challenges to both the child and parents. Some of the problems are sexual abuse, adolescence pride, puberty, low self -esteem, sudden withdrawal from parents, depression, teenage pregnancy, teenage arrogance, stubbornness, peer pressure, bullying, addiction, television, music, films, computer games, bad friends, romantic relationships, drugs, alcoholism, gangs, sexual relationship, etc.
Parents should read and learn extensively about these so as to be able to prevent or handle problems that will emanate from them.
LOSING HER TO MARRIAGE: Funny as this may, be one of the most difficult times for a parent is the time the daughter wants to get married; it is always a trying period but that is a reality of life.
