GOD’ STANDARDS FOR MARRIAGE

Marriage is an institution ordained by God in the garden of Eden. Apart from having a purpose for it, He also has a standard on how to make it work. He laid down these standards for people to follow. Here are God’s standards for marriage.

Severance (Leaving): God demands that man should leave his father and mother after marriage (Genesis 2:24) and that a woman should leave her people and her father’s house. (Psalm 45:10-11). This leaving involves:

Leaving Physically: Getting a house separate from his/her parent’s house.

Leaving Financially: Not depending on parents for sustenance and for the upkeep of the family.

Leaving Emotionally: Your mind should be for your spouse alone. Missing your parents in your husband’s house is wrong.

Leaving Mentally: Your mentality about your relationship with your marriage should be changed. Your parent should not be number one in your life.

Leaving Spiritually: Your spouse should be your number one prayer focus, not your parents.

Leaving Socially: Do things in common with your spouse. Make him/her your best friend.

Cleaving: Married couples should stay together under one roof, inside one room and on the same bed. They should embrace each other, cleave to each other. Therefore, one plus one should be one. Couples that live in different places, houses and rooms are not fulfilling God’s blueprint for marriage. (Gen. 2:24, Mk 10:8)

One Flesh: God wants every man and his wife to become one flesh. It is not just about togetherness, it is about oneness. It is not just about unity but about intimacy. Marriage makes a husband and his wife to be seen as one in Heaven. 1+1=1 before God, it is a mystery from God.

Every couple should build a ONE FLESH MARRIAGE where they are to have everything as one.

Nakedness: God’s idea of marriage is about nakedness. This means two things:

Total Openness: Nothing to hide from each other. Weakness and strength are made known; plans, visions, purpose, ambition, etc. are made known. No secrecy whatsoever.
Sex and Romance: It also means, husband and wife have nothing to hide from each other in terms of their body. It is no longer a sin to look at each other’s nakedness and have sex without any inhibition.
