Suddenly, her phone rang; it was her son on the line to inform her of the successful delivery of a new-born baby by his wife.
Mama threw away the phone shouting, “She don born! She don born!!
She rolled on the floor, shouting and singing at the same time.
Suddenly she got up and asked, “Eh, I no even ask wetin she born?” (I did not even ask about the gender of the baby). She spoke to a little crowd who had gathered because of the noise she made.
She picked her phone and called her son and spoke to him. Suddenly, she shouted again, “Na boy! Na boy!! Na boy she born!!!” Her noise this time was greater than before. She rolled more on the floor, overwhelmed with the joy.
When she got up, she ordered drinks for all passers-by, neighbours and relatives. When somebody reminded her to wait till the eighth day, the naming ceremony before she celebrated, she said “No way! Na eight days dem dey use to celebrate baby boy? No, be on the eighth day” (You don’t wait till the eighth day to celebrate if it is a baby boy).
This tells you how important a baby boy can be in this part of the world. They are welcomed in a special way; they are seen as warriors, leaders and fathers. So, they are celebrated widely by all and sundry because they always think a man is born when a baby boy is born. What a mistake.
The truth is that it is not every male that will grow up to become a man. It is not every man that will grow up to become a total man. It takes much more than an erection to be a man. It takes much more than an ejaculation to be a total man.
