WHAT PATIENCE WILL DO FOR YOUR MARRIAGE

By Bisi Adewale

“For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise”. Heb 10:36

Patience in marriage is the ability to tolerate, endure and accept our spouse’s wrong, annoying and provocative behaviour without complaining or getting angry.

It is also the ability to wait calmly when our expectations are not being met in marriage or when things we want or expect from our spouses are delayed.

WHEN TO BE PATIENCE IN MARRIAGE

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us”. Heb 12:1

You need to be patient in your marriage during the following times:

  1.    When your expectation is not being met.
  2.    When your spouse is angry.
  3.    With your pregnant wife. A pregnant woman is neither normal nor abnormal. You need to learn to be patient with a woman who is the carrier the burden of both of you when she “misbehaves”.
  4.    When you feel your spouse should do something better.
  5.    You need to be patient with your spouse’s weaknesses.
  6.    When your spouse behaves foolishly.
  7.    In a time of conflicts.
  8.    When you don’t understand your spouse.
  9.    When your husband is broke, you need to be patient with him.
  10. You need to be patient when you are right.
  11. Be patience when you are wrong.
  12. You need to be patient with in-laws.
  13. When you are in financial needs.

HOW TO DEVELOP VIRTUES OF PATIENCE

Patience is a virtue that needs to be developed continuously if joy and peace are things you desired in your marriage.

  1.    Ask God for it.
  2.    Auto suggestion. When you discover you want to take some rash steps, speak to yourself (call yourself by name) and say be patient, be patient.”
  3.    Ask for the fruit of the spirit called long-suffering spirit to help you tolerate and wait calmly when things go wrong or expectations are not met.
  4.    Practice it. Deliberately walk in patience, avoid rushing into decision making
  5.    Learn never to act or speak until you have all the facts on ground. We often say things we ought not to say because we are ill-informed.
  6.    Ask for the spirit of positive thinking. Thinking positively makes one learn how to wait; which is the foundation of patience.
  7.    Learn the act of quietness. Quietness helps develop patience. Nobody can quote your silence, so please speak less.
  8.    Learn from patient people. Move closer to people who have learnt not to attach much importance to issues. Copy how they handle issues.
  9.    By all means, grow. Children are known to be very impatient. Please get out of anger, grow up. Develop, become mature and better.
