TALK YOUR WAY TO A BETTER MARRIAGE
Bisi Adewale
A man sent his wife a voice message using, “Where would you like me to pick you up, old gal?”
“Old Gal” is one of the affectionate nicknames she loved to be called. But his cell phone didn’t understand the word, “gal”. Instead, it sent the words “old cow”. This made the woman mad with her husband. She remembered how her classmates at elementary school teased her by calling her a cow because her father was a cow farmer. So, her husband calling her an ‘old cow’ made her very sad. Can you imagine her thought pattern?
Communication is the soul of all human relationships. It’s what makes us different from other animals. If the marriage will be strong, communication must be effective. Communication breakdown makes a marriage go down; ineffective communication makes marriage to be difficult and stormy.
Learning to talk rightly and listen actively are what it takes to be a better spouse. If you can’t talk rightly, you can’t understand the level that makes you sync as a couple. You will be like a French man married to an English woman but can’t speak each other’s languages.
When I travelled for the first time to a country with French as the lingua franca, it was difficult for me to communicate because I can’t speak French. The receptionist on duty at the hotel I lodged in could not speak English. It took about thirty minutes to let her know that I needed a toothbrush. She came back with a tube of toothpaste instead. It took another five minutes to make her understand that I needed a toothbrush, not toothpaste. It was very frustrating.
Getting communication right in marriage should be the target of all couples in marriage. Without it, there will be battles. In other words, marriage will become a minefield.
