Benson’s eyes bore into Hannah’s as silence filled the room, only the racing heart was heard. Mrs. Benson looked at them in confusion, her head pounding in anger. She had known Hannah many years ago; she used to work in their family hospital. She had been a friendly nurse and Katerine loved it when she attended to her, what she could not understand is this gathering, she looked at Alfred and then to Benson later turned to Hannah in total confusion, son? She asked in bewilderment. Her son? What does that mean? THE AGONY OF LOVE-Episode 34

I am sure you are not asking me , are you? Alfred barked at Mrs. Benson.

Would you show some respect young man, Benson shouted at Alfred.

Oh Dad, please spear me all this, and explain what this woman is talking about”.

Benson looked at Hannah again, Hannah can u tell me what’s going on?

Hannah walked towards Mr. Benson, am sure you remembered what happened 30 years ago, she said nervously. Benson shifted looking pale.

w…what but… but you … Mr. Benson stammered as his heart ponder very fast.

He can’t Hannah suddenly said, he doesn’t know”

Mrs. Benson turned to Hannah you better explain before I will loose my patient.

Alfred stood by the wall watching what was going on before him.

Hannah swallowed hard, refusing to look at any one she was looking at the ground as if there was something there. Benson came to me over 30 years ago.

I have to, am sorry Hannah said.
He came to me years back to ask for a favour, she turned her watering eyes as she faced Mrs. Benson. He was so much in love with you but when his family started asking for grandchild and you didn’t give him one even after three years: he was stressed out on the pressure that was mounted on you she paused and started. When you both came to the hospital for check-up the doctor told him that you are infertile.

What! Mrs. Benson shouted” and turned to her husband who was walking up and down, infertile? Benson how can I be? Why didn’t you tell me?

He couldn’t tell you, Hannah interrupted before the senator could say any thing. The doctor said there is a high chance that you can never get pregnant and he didn’t know how to break the news to you. He was already under pressure from his family to give then grandchild and they were planning on given him another wife. I saw him as he was leaving looking dejected. Then… he asked me… she raised her worried eyes to Mr. Benson grave ones and swallowed hard. He asked me to bear a child for him.

Mrs. Benson gasped, looking pale

What’s this Hannah? Benson barked as Alfred started walking around. We didn’t go through it why bring it up now.

Hannah smiled drily, that what I made you believe she said and faced Alfred. One mouth three weeks after we made the arrangement, I discovered I was pregnant. I was to tell you when you shocked me with the news of your wife been pregnant. It was the most shocking news I have ever heard. Apparently the doctor was wrong with his diagnosis, he gave you the report of another patient, a cold dread settled as the story became clear, I didn’t want to destroy your family with the news of my pregnancy, so I kept my pregnancy hidden; Mr. Benson turned pale as sheet as Hannah wiped away the tears from her eyes.

Lord have mercy, Alfred said as he put his hands on his head.

I carried the pregnancy without letting him know but… but..

but… What! Benson barked he didn’t like this at all, it was the most shocking news he had ever heard. He hated injustice he couldn’t believe he left a woman carrying his child all by herself. How could Hannah made him look like a bad person

Hannah looked around in fear, I am sorry, am sorry I never meant to cause any harm, I was trying to protect you all and keep you happy.

But what! Alfred shouted throwing his hands in the air.

Nine month later, after I put to bed, I was in my ward when I was in my bed with my baby when Kate was brought in, I didn’t know anything until when a fellow nurse came into my room and… she raised her guilty eyes as she looked at Mr. Benson who looked terribly tense. She took a deep breath and continued again, she told me that you.. she turned her eyes to Katherine that you lost the baby.

Dead silence gained every one by the revelation, even Alfred stopped walking around when he heard the news, Katherine looked like she might faint soon by the news, Mr. Benson stood rooted on the ground like he was graved out of the stone looking murderously to Hannah.

I couldn’t bear the thought of such a lovely couple would again stay childless after so much hope, so I did the hardest thing I have ever done” she wiped her tears which are gushing out now, I had the doctor gave you my child.

That’s a lie Katherine shouted, as she grabbed Hannah shaking her like a doll, you lie, you lie Alfred is my son.

Alfred ran out of the room hitting the door so hard that it almost came out of the frame.

Alfred , Benson shouted after him but Alfred was too fast, he vanished into the elevator before the senator could catch him, he returned into the room but Kate caught him on his shirt, how could you Benson, how could you do this to me she used all her strength to shake the immoveable Benson, I have spent years begging you for my mistake yet you did something to me and you hid it, how could you!

I didn’t know Kate he said in anger as he grabbed her by the shoulder to clam her down.

Leave me she cried, leaving her husband to fall on the floor, I threw away my daughter for a child that isn’t mine, oh my God she cried.

Amara was having a really good day; she had woken up with huge smile on her face. Just remembering the previous night with kelvin, he had made her laugh like old times, as much as she tried to remain passive. Kelvin was bringing old memories he knew can bring smile on her face and telling her jokes, Amara didn’t know how much she missed smiling until yesterday. She had laughed and she only have kelvin to thank. She was surprised when she found out that Kelvin was the founder of Reliance, and it was even disgraceful that she didn’t know before. And Kelvin was even surprised that she didn’t know. He has thought she knew and was hiding herself all this while. But she hadn’t know, she had brought her coldness into her world of business. Amara hadn’t had a cause to deal with Reliance, just like she did Brackets. She never did any research on them; finding out that Kelvin was the founder of the popular reliance was a big shock to her.

Amara came to the office smiling, the cloth she was putting on gave her a different look, and she let down her hair for the first time. Her staff wondered what changed her.

Amara smiled without opening her eyes as taga walked in, there is a handsome man here to see you,

I guessed so, without an appointment? Who is he? Amara asked.

Mr. Alfred Benson, Taga replied.

Amara stood up instantly, her eyes fly opened at once, Amara’s head pounded heavily , she developed instant headache, suddenly she was where she was six years ago where she said her goodbye, silence envelop the place as Amara stared at Taga. Taga turned angrily to look at Alfred who was standing behind her, I never told you to come inside sir. Turning back to look at her worried boss, she had watched her boss lake before someone last week but not like this, she could see shock and fear written all over her face, she became more angry as she looked at the man standing behind her, she just started seeing her boss happy for the first time and she’s not going to allow this man destroy it,

Alfred ignored taga as he looked at Amara, hello Amara ‘ he said as if he just like the way she is right now, seeing her leave was breath taking, and he wonder why he ever called her a village girl, the woman standing before her looked beautiful and elegant and the type of woman any man would like to show his friends, apart from the time he had married and impregnated his sister nothing had ever shocked him like the news he heard this morning it had shaken him to the Bo mesas he ran out of the hotel and was running around the street of Lagos he had liked the positive side of the story.

Amara opened her mouth and then opened it again and she suddenly held the table, taga looked at Alfred and said sir I think you should take your live now, would you like me to call the security.

Amara heard tega but she couldn’t make out what she was saying, her heart beat was pounding so loud in her ears that she couldn’t hear what others was saying, what misfortune brought you hear Alfred she shouted, she shouldn’t have given him the privilege of seeing her fear,

I had to see you Amara, it been years. Alfred said noticing her cold tone.

I don’t want to see you even if the whole century passes get out of my office she shouted.

you heard her sir tega said

Alfred looked at her and said, are you not a secretary what are you doing here.

who the hell gave you the right to talk to her like that , Amara shouted. I see you are still the self obsessed fool you were Alfred.
