Understanding Money Pt 2

– Bisi Adewale

Money has been categorized among factors that easily destroy marriage; therefore financial intelligence is needed for a successful marriage. Here, lies what you need to understand about money  to manage your family finance effectively.

1.Money answers all things it can buy. Money is good; money is needed. Money is sweet, but money cannot buy everything. It can neither answer every question nor break every riddle. It is not ultimate contrarily to what people think; it is not the greatest thing in the world.
It can buy bed not sleep, drug not health, it can buy weapons of war but not peace, food not appetite, cosmetics not love, car not safe journey, wife not good marriage, wealth not long life, Bible not salvation. Don’t rely on money; it is not a reliable friend.
Money says, “Beware of me, I can buy what matters, but not what matter most”.
2.Your money is your blood. When you waste money, you waste blood. You labour day and night to make money; when you do this; you ‘burn’ blood like fuel. If you spend money without wisdom you waste this blood, you can’t afford to spend irrationally, apply wisdom.
Money says, “If you spend me foolishly, I waste your destiny lavishly”.
3. Debt is not by force, it is by choice. Nobody will force you to go into debt, it is a choice and it is a bad choice. A debtor will ever remain a slave of his creditor. You are not free in debt; you are not wise when you borrow for frivolities. If you make money in ‘drops’ and spend it in ‘floods’ you will be drowned in the ocean of debt. Another name for it is death. Yes! Death of freedom, ideas and financial progress.
When your salary is #50,000 and you buy cloth worth #150,000 to be paid back gradually in 9 months with interest; you are not wise. When you borrow to throw lavish party for your granny’s burial, you are not wise. When you borrow for your birthday party, you are a big fool (sorry, if that is too hard). Avoid debt like a plaque. Buy what you can afford, spend below your means, don’t spend tomorrow today. Debt has a way of sapping tomorrow of its power today.
Money says, “I have a way of honouring the wise, I am an expert in punishing a fool”.
4.Money is a slave, money is a master. If you make yourself a slave, money will be your master. When you make yourself master, money will be your slave. You are totally in charge in this issue.
If you abandon your family in pursuit of money you are its slave. If you abandon God in pursuit of money; you are a slave. If you work so much that you don’t have time to rest, you are a slave, you are also a slave if you are in debt, if money dictate the time of your life, if you fight regularly because of money. Which one are you? A slave or a master?
Money says, “If you fail to manage me, I will damage you”.
It is needful for couples to have a mutual picture of how their marriage should be. Having a positive attitude towards marriage, our partner and our future together will help a great deal to bring peace into our home. The foundation of any destroyed marriage is not action but thinking.
“Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life”. Proverbs 4:23 “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he”. Thoughts that flow from our mind reflect the kind of person we are. Roman emperor, marchus states: “A man’s life is what his thought makes of it”. Take good care of your heart; think positively if you want to make the most of your life.
