Family Finance: How to Cut Your Transport Cost
Pastor Bisi Adewale
The news of subsidy removal on PMS otherwise known as Petrol came like a volcano on January 1st when it was announced. Many Nigerians cried foul to the point of taking over the street with protest. It was such a massive protest that shook the whole nation. When it was fixed at #141.00 per litre, many abandoned their cars, generators and many other types of equipment that was uses petrol.
However, after one week of street protest, the federal government reduced the pump price to #97.
Thank God for the reduction to #97, but one fact that I want you to note is that your cost of living has increased without a corresponding increment in your earnings. This increase has caused sharp increase price of goods, accommodation, services, transportation, etc which the focus of this write-up.
1. BUY GOOD CARS, NOT OVER-USED.
Now that there’s a fuel hike in the country; you will definitely spend more which will definitely affect your family finance adversely. In this era of fuel subsidy removal, one of the best ways to reduce your transportation costs is to buy good car not over used ones. Good cars from reputable brands which are known for fuel economy should be the kind of car you should use. Smoky and over-used cars consumed a lot of fuel thereby making you to spend more money on fuel.
2. SERVICE YOUR CAR REGULARLY.
If you don’t service you car regularly, the engine will get weary on time which will increase the rate of fuel consumption of your car and this will automatically lead to financial drain. Service your car regularly at least once in three months. This will keep the engine of your car in good order which will reduce your spending.
3. MAKE USE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT.
Put aside your “showmanship” park your car at home and board public transport like the ‘BRT’ buses to wherever you want to go. By making use of public transport, you spend less and even have time to rest in transit, especially in Lagos where heavy traffic is a daily experience. Put aside your ego and join the public transport to safe the cost of transportation.
4. MAKE USE OF CAR ROTATION SYSTEM
Car rotation system is one of the best system of cutting transportation expenses. Are you confused? Let me explain how it works for you. Assuming there are four friends working in the same office with four cars (i.e one each) on the first week of the month, all the four friends will use a car belonging to one of them. One the second week, they will make use of another car belonging to one of them. This will go in a circle until all the four cars is used for one week in a month.
What a wisdom! This car rotation system will prolong the life span of your car, it will safe you the cost of constant repairs of car, it will make your tyre last, you will cut cost of fuel consumption and ultimately; you will be free from daily driving stress on the hold-ups.
