TOOLS FOR EFFECTIVE YOUTH LEADERSHIP

  • Bisi Adewale

Psalm 78:70-72 KJV
[70] He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
[71] From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
[72] So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.

1) INTEGRITY
Proverbs 20:6
Most men will proclaim everyone his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
A wall or a building that is strong and has no cracks is said to have integrity. The same could be said for great and successful youth leader.
— A man of integrity do not act one way in one situation and another in a different situation.
— A man of integrity delivers what you promised the time you said you would do so, not one time, or sometimes, but all the time.
2) HONESTY
Proverbs 26:28
“A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin”
— The root of integrity is honesty;
— saying the truth and nothing but the truth all the time, all the way.
— It is regularly said that “honesty is the best policy” but I would add that honesty is the only policy for a successful youth leadership
3 CREATIVITY
— Youth are dynamic,so be creative if you want to lead them.
— If you are dormant Youth won’t follow you
— To be a great Christian youth leader, you need to know how wear new show but walking in the old path

4) SELF SACRIFICE

Proverbs 27:17
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend”
— A great leader shows that he can give up personal gains for the good of the whole.
— To build a great character for success in youth leadership, you will not only be ready to serve others but to make sacrifices for them.
— Youth hardly forget those that make sacrifices on their behalf. They do remember and even reward them.

5) SELF CONTROL
Proverbs 25:28
“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”
— The ability to make decisions, good decisions, about what we will and will not do is at the core of what we become in regard to our character.
— No matter how beautiful or expensive a car is, it will be suicidal to jump into it for a journey when you know its braking system is faulty.
— Self-control is the braking system of human being; absence of it is self-sabotage.
— Self-control is the ability to choose to do the things we should, and to refrain from doing the things we shouldn’t.
— When we exhibit self-control, we build trust in our friends, family and followers. They respect and want to follow us.
— When we do not have self control  they quickly see through our character flaws and begin to take cover.
— Success in youth leadership is unlikely if you lack self-control; failure is what would be the norm.
6) PRAYER
Fervent prayer life is needed if we must make impact in our youth leadership, remember that we are not fighting flesh and blood.
James 5:16
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
7) THE BIBLE
— If our life is Bible based and our decisions are Bible Controlled it will be easy for us to live better life and affect lives around us.
Joshua 1:8
[8] This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
8) WISDOM OF GOD
Proverbs 8:12
I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
— You will need wisdom to handle the Pastorate and Church leaders
— You will need wisdom to handle youths
— You will need wisdom to deal with parents of your youths
— You will need wisdom to handle romantic relationships among Your Youths.
9) VISION
Psalm 89:19
Then thou spakest in vision to thy holy one, and saidst, I have laid help upon one that is mighty; I have exalted one chosen out of the people.
— Leading with vision is leading indeed
— You need to ask yourself, where am I taking these youth to?
— Develop a vision and move them there
10) RELATIONAL SKILL
Psalm 78:70-71
[70] He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
[71] From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
— Don’t be a Program-Focused youth leader
— Build relationship with your Pastor, your youth and their Parents
— Meet the needs,Strengthen the weak, feed the sheep.
11) COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Proverbs 12:18
There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.
— A youth leader must be a great communicator
— To be a good communicator you must be a good listener and a good speaker
— Communication is the to success in every human community
12) POWER OF GOD
James 5:17-18
[17] Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
[18] And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
— You will need to operate in the power of God to help youth overcome many of their problems and confront the powers of Devil who is directly against youths around you.
— Like in time of Moses there are lots of Pharaoh holding down your youth, liberate them
