Text: Hebrews 12:1-11
Introduction: Parenting is an art. A skill that needs to be learnt. Unfortunately,  it is one aspect of life that we do not plan for nor train for. We take counseling classes before marriage,  but none whatsoever before the children begin to come seems to me that we are making a monumental mistake. However,  it is not too late to address the problem.  Parenting is a ministry and a calling. Every parent has a divine assigmment to prepare a child of destiny for God. We can be like Hannah who promised her special only child to God, even before he came (1 Samuel 1:11) one thing that is sure is that it is NOT TOO LATE for us to be used in God’s end time plan to parent children of destiny for this season. Our parenting style would most often determine how well our children turn out as adults. Key to parenting is much prayer, patience and perseverance with the right mixture of love and discipline. This is where we want to start. I want to describe four parenting styles that will help us get perspective on this issue.
?Parenting Styles:
Type 1-This parenting type is the PERMISSIVE parent, described best as the FEARFUL parent. David was a permissive parent. 2 Samuel 13:20
Type 2- The NEGLECTFUL parent is one best described as the FORSAKING parent (Job 39:13-18). The Ostrich has an hazardous way of raising its young.
Type 3: The AUTHORITARIAN parent or the FIGHTING parent. They show very little love and attention but are very high on discipline.  Parents who hold strictly to Proverbs 22:15.
Type 4- The AUTHORITATIVE parent is the one FELLOWSHIPPING parent who is able to use a balanced combination of love and discipline to parent. The keys to effective parenting as we see is LOVE and DISCIPLINE.  It is not too late to start to show our children this by embarking on a new quest to follow biblical discipline in our parenting style.
?Characteristics Of Biblical Parenting
1. The necessity of discipline- is to deter destruction (Hebrews 12:4)
2. The way you discipline- must be in action and word (Hebrews 12:5)
3. The motive in discipline- is to express love (Hebrews 12:6-9)
4. The goal of discipline- is to teach obedience (Hebrews 12:9). We must teach children godly submission- teaching them to do the right thing.
5. The result of discipline- is in the short-term pain, but is the long-term gain for the child raised in this way (Hebrews 12:10-11)
?Conclusion
It is never too late to return to God and confess our mistakes especially where God’s heritage is concerned. Lamentation 2:19 tells us to cry out to God, for the life of our children.  We can do that just now asking God to forgive us our lapses in parenting His heritage.  It is not too late.
